The Master Plan!

Itinerary for trip

After a lot of time on the internet booking hostels, a lot of time on the phone to STA travel, and some distractions from Blink 182, we now have a master plan!

Itinerary for the 30 days goes a little something like this:

Sun 22nd - Leave Edinburgh, arrive in Sydney 22 hours later...

Sat 23rd to Friday 27th - SYDNEY. Some conference time for Shona, Bondi Beach on the Wednesday.

Sat 28th - Palm Beach (Home and Away http://tinyurl.com/2vfomdr)

Sun 28th to Tuesday 31st - Katoomba and the Blue Mountains (Bush walks, a little more conference time for Shona - it's gonna be a bit chilly here, brrrrr!)

Wed 1st
- Fly to Brisbane, pick up our sexy stationwagon hire car, then we'll be travelling to Cairns within 2 weeks with many stops on the way...this is where it gets busy!

Here's a more detailed map:

And here come the main stops of the journey:

Fri 3rd - Australia Zoo (home of Steve Irwin, crocodile hunter)

Sat 4th - Humpback Whale watching in Hervey Bay (August to November is whale season, thousands of Humpback whales migrate from Antartica to mate and give birth)

Sun 5th to Mon 6th
- 2 days, one night on Fraser Island (largest sand island in the world, there's no roads so the whole time is spend 4WD on the sand!). We'll be sleeping in the middle of the rainforest in a wilderness lodge, visiting the Maheno shipwreck, swimming in the Champagne Pools and more!

Wed 8th - Airlie Beach

Thu 9th to Fri 10th - 2 days, 1 night on a super fast Maxi Yacht, stopping to explore beaches around the Whitsundays and snorkel on the coral reefs.

Sun 12th
- Whitewater rafting on the River Tully.

Mon 13th - Party in Cairns for last night in Australia.

Next stop is Japan...

Wed 16th & Thu 17th - Fukushima

Fri 17th to Sun 19th - Tokyo

Mon 20th
- Hometime.
Still a few things to finalise in Japan, so we'll put up some more details soon!

AMAZING. Who's jealous?!

2 Weeks till Departure...

Welcome to the blog for our Australia and Japan adventure!

overcast 16 °C

Departure Date: 22nd August 2010

Not long to go now!

I've applied for my visa (hopefully I'll have it approved tomorrow!), got most of the clothes I need, and my backpack is ready to be packed. Just need to get a few bits and pieces, like sunscreen so I don't burn my ridiculously pale skin...

Shona is busy busy busy with her PhD work getting it ready for the conference she'll be at while we're in Sydney, so hopefully she's not stressing too much!

Plans so far for the first week of the trip include visiting Palm Beach - aka Summer Bay for all you Home and Away fans - to hang out at the Surf Club, hiking in the Blue Mountains in Katoomba, and just generally having an awesome time in Sydney. Quick fact - the Blue Mountains are called that because of the blue haze in the area that comes from the eucalyptus oil given off by the eucalyptus trees.

Next up comes our mystery 2 weeks driving from Brisbane to Cairns - not sure what we'll be doing exactly, but for sure will be snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef (world's biggest single structure made by living organisms, it can be seen from space), sailing in the Whitsundays, visiting Steve Irwin's Australia Zoo, four wheel driving on Fraser Island, and white water rafting on the River Tully, among other things!

Then we're off to Japan, where I will endeavour to eat the weirdest food possible, both of us will stuff ourselves with noodles and ramen, ride the bullet train and try to fit in in Harajuku.

You'll find out more when we do, and I'll try to keep this updated as we go along so you can follow our journey!
